What is fring-a-ling?
fring-a-ling is a SIP service that works with fring to enable you to make calls to
international telephone numbers from your mobile phone. By using a SIP service
instead of your mobile phone provider for the calls, you can make huge savings on your
international call costs.
What
is fring?
fring is a mobile internet
service and community that enables you to access and interact with your social networks
on-the-go, make free calls and live chat with all your fring, Skype, MSN Messenger, Google
Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM friends using your handset’s internet connection.
Beyond fring’s social appeal, it also saves you money, letting you make affordable
local and international calls to landline and regular cellular numbers using your
fring-a-ling account or almost any other SIP internet voice service, even from non-SIP
enabled handsets.
How does the system work?
fring is an application that you can easily download and install on your mobile phone.
Once installed, you can configure
it for your fring-a-ling account details. Your phone's contact list will appear on
fring's home page. To call one of the contacts using fring-a-ling, choose the
contact and select "SIP call". fring will send the call to our system in
London and we will connect you to your friend.
How do I get started?

How can I check my account balance?
You can see how much calling credit you have left on your fring-a-ling account by
logging on to My fring-a-ling;
your online control panel.
Can I see my call records?
Yes. You can see details of the calls you have made through fring-a-ling by
logging on to My fring-a-ling;
your online control panel.

What phones can I use?
fring currently works with telephones that use Symbian (8, 9 and UIQ) and Windows
Mobile. This covers many of the newer Nokia and Sony Ericsson handsets and
smartphones.
Does fring work on an iPhone and iPod touch?
Yes. A version of fring that supports SIP calls is available. You need to
download it from the App Store.
Does fring work on Java (J2ME) phones?
A version of fring called minifring is available for Java ME devices. This does
not support voice calls, so you will not be able to use it with fring-a-ling. But,
you'll still benefit from joining fring's growing global community.
My phone doesn't support fring. What can I do?
fring are constantly working to support more phones. In the meantime, you can
make calls on your fring-a-ling account using our free softdialler for Windows.
What number format should I use
when calling?
Your fring-a-ling calls should use the format Country + Number. For
example, to call a mobile in the UK, you would call 447500000000. Optionally, the
called number can include "00" or "+" at the beginning. It is
possible for us to reconfigure your account to match the way you call from a landline in
your country. Please contact our support team for more information.

How much bandwidth
does fring use?
While you making a SIP calls, fring uses 133kB per minute (the UIQ version uses 144kB
per minute). So, a seven minute call will usually consume less than 1MB. While
fring is online but idle, it will use about 10kB per hour.
If you use a WiFi connection, this data is usually free. If you use Internet data
from your mobile phone provider, then they may charge you for this, unless your calling
package includes a data allowance. You should the data charges with your service
provider.
Should I use 3G data, GPRS or WiFi?
WiFi usually provides the best quality and is often free, so we recommend you use WiFi
wherever possible. fring works well over a 3G data connection and even with a GPRS
(2G) data connection. But, if you do not have a data plan with your phone provider,
data charges may apply.
Can I restrict fring to WiFi only?
Yes. fring can be configured to allow only WiFi connections to be used.

Will DTMF work?
Our tests show that DTMF (touchtone) does not work with fring.
Can I use a SIP adapter instead of fring?
Yes. fring-a-ling works with SIP adapters such as the popular Linksys PAP2.
This will let you make international calls on your fring-a-ling account. But,
you will not be able to call other fring users. Please see our configuration guidelines for more
information.
Can I make more than one call at the same
time?
Standard fring-a-ling accounts only allow one call to be made at a time. This can
be changed. Please contact our support team explaining your requirements.
Can I call other fring users?
If you are using fring, then you will be able to make voice calls to other fring users.
If you are using minifring for the Java ME platform, then voice calls will not be
possible.

Can I use other SIP providers?
Yes; that's the beauty of fring. It gives you the freedom to manage your
communications in a way that suits you. You can easily reconfigure fring to use
other SIP providers. Please see the fring
user guide for more information.
Do you have a reseller system?
fring-a-ling is a direct sale product and is not
designed to be resold.

What is the set up cost?
fring is a free application for your mobile phone and there are no set up costs for new
fring-a-ling accounts.
How much will you charge me?

fring-a-ling rates change regularly to stay competitive.
When should I pay you?
Your fring-a-ling service is prepay. Your account must be in credit before
calling is allowed. When your balance reaches zero, the calling will be disabled
until we process your next payment.
How can I pay you?
We accept wire transfers and Western Union Quick Pay and we do not charge for those
payment methods. Subject to approval, we accept online payments in Pounds Sterling
without a transaction fee. We can also accept online payments in Euro and US
Dollars, but there is a 5% transaction fee for these payment methods. We accept
PayPal with a 5% transaction fee.
Is there a minimum term?
No. But, your account may be disabled if you do not use it for three months.
I make lots of calls. Can I get lower
rates?
No. Our rates are final and not negotiable.
But, I can find lower rates elsewhere?
You can also buy a cheap car. That doesn't mean it will start in the morning.
